At the heart of the Rise Above Cancer Foundation is an extraordinary story of courage, resilience, and unyielding determination. The foundation’s founder, Chengetai Nyamande, is not just a two-time cancer survivor, she is a beacon of hope for millions of cancer patients and their families worldwide.
Chengetai’s battle with cancer began when she was just 16 years old, an age where most teenagers are focused on friendships, studies, and dreaming of their future. At this tender age, she received the life-altering diagnosis of advanced nasopharyngeal cancer, a rare and aggressive form of cancer. Instead of enjoying the typical milestones of youth, Chengetai faced the unimaginable challenges of chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and the emotional toll of battling a life-threatening disease. She spent her days in hospital rooms, enduring treatments that drained her body but never her spirit.
After years of grueling treatments, Chengetai triumphed in her first battle with cancer. But just when she thought the darkest days were behind her, life tested her resilience once more. At the age of 28, while building her career and dreaming of the future, Chengetai was diagnosed with cancer for the second time. The second battle was even more challenging, both physically and emotionally. The treatments left her with life-altering side effects, some of which she continues to live with today.
These experiences shaped her understanding of the immense challenges cancer patients face not just during treatment but long after remission. From the emotional and physical scars to the financial burdens, from the lingering physical side effects to the toll on families, Chengetai experienced it all. These battles became the foundation of her mission: to ensure that no one fights cancer alone.
Through the Rise Above Cancer Foundation, Chengetai has turned her personal pain into a powerful movement of hope and support. Her story is not one of despair but of triumph, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to improving the lives of others. The foundation is her legacy, a way to ensure that every cancer patient, survivor, and their families receive the care, compassion, and resources they need to rise above cancer.
